YOUR NO-JARGON GENRE MAP

What kind of anime sounds like you?

Anime is a medium, not one genre. It can be funny, romantic, frightening, comforting, action-packed—or several of those at once.

START WITH THE FEELING

The main genres

These work much like genres in movies, television, and books. Pick the experience you want, then expect plenty of overlap.

Action

Fights, chases, powers, danger, and high-energy conflict. The story usually keeps moving and the stakes often grow.

Try it if: you enjoy superheroes, martial arts, or big battle scenes.

Newer pick · 2024Kaiju No. 8 — an older rookie finally gets his chance to fight giant monsters.

A journey into new places, challenges, or discoveries. The destination matters, but the characters’ growth matters too.

Try it if: you like quests, exploration, and found-family stories.

Newer pick · 2024Delicious in Dungeon — a rescue quest powered by friendship and monster cuisine.

Comedy

Try it if: you want something playful, silly, or easy to unwind with.

Newer pick · 2025Witch Watch — magical mishaps turn everyday teenage life into cheerful chaos.

Newer pick · 2025Ruri Rocks — curiosity about minerals turns into a gentle outdoor learning adventure.

Sports

Training, teamwork, rivalry, and competition turn a sport into a character-driven journey.

Try it if: you enjoy underdogs, team bonds, and hard-earned victories.

Newer pick · 2025Medalist — a determined young skater and her coach chase an Olympic dream.

Supernatural

Ghosts, spirits, curses, demons, psychic abilities, or unexplained forces exist alongside the normal world.

COMMONLY MISTAKEN FOR GENRES

These are audience labels

They describe the readership a Japanese manga magazine was marketed toward. They do not tell you the full story, guarantee an age rating, or decide who is “allowed” to enjoy it.

Shōnen

Teen boys

Often energetic stories about goals, friendship, rivalry, action, sports, or adventure—but it can include romance and comedy too.

Shōjo

Teen girls

Often emphasizes relationships, emotion, romance, personal growth, or beautiful visual storytelling—not only love stories.

Seinen

Adult men

May explore more complex, mature, quiet, violent, psychological, or everyday subjects. “Adult” does not always mean explicit.

Josei

Adult women

Often focuses on adult relationships, work, family, identity, or grounded emotional experiences, though the tone can vary widely.

Kodomomuke

Children

Designed primarily for young children, usually with accessible stories, clear themes, and age-appropriate presentation.

WORDS YOU’LL SEE OFTEN

Popular themes & subgenres

These labels describe a familiar setup, subject, or style that can sit inside many different genres.

Isekai

A character is transported, reborn, or trapped in another world—often a fantasy or game-like one.

Mecha

Large robots or powered machines play a major role, from military drama to colorful action.

Magical girl

Girls or young women transform and use magical powers, often mixing heroism with friendship and growing up.

Iyashikei

“Healing” stories designed to feel calm and restorative, usually through nature, community, or gentle everyday life.

FOR INFORMED VIEWING

Mature themes & content labels

“Mature” does not automatically mean sexual. It can describe difficult subject matter, graphic violence, intense fear, or adult relationships. These labels help you decide what fits your comfort level.

Psychological & dark themes

Stories may explore grief, manipulation, isolation, mental distress, moral conflict, or characters losing their sense of reality.

Graphic violence & gore

Some action, horror, and thriller titles show injuries, blood, torture, or death in explicit detail. Check content notes if those images affect you.

Fan service & ecchi

Fan service means scenes added mainly to attract or tease viewers. Ecchi usually means suggestive humor, revealing outfits, or sexual situations without being explicit pornography.

Hentai

This label refers to sexually explicit adult animation. It is separate from ecchi and should be treated as adults-only content, not as a general beginner anime category.

Trauma, abuse & crime

A story may include domestic abuse, sexual violence, exploitation, war, self-harm, suicide, organized crime, or other disturbing experiences.

Sex, substances & relationships

Some anime portrays sex, nudity, alcohol, drugs, complicated adult relationships, or workplace power dynamics with varying levels of detail.

A useful rule: If a description uses words like “dark,” “uncensored,” “explicit,” “gory,” or “fan service,” check the title’s rating and a spoiler-light content guide before pressing play.

Genre is not an age rating.

Cute art can contain mature themes, and action shows can range from child-friendly to extremely violent. Before watching with children—or if you avoid certain content—check the official rating and content notes for that specific title.
